I always had a good feeling about South Africa and so far they have exceeded my expectations.
As a traveller I do not have the mental baggage that nationals of any country develop over the years, caused by the internal issues either social or political. Normal humans take more notice of world problems amplified by the media than on what is happening in their own backyards. The majority feeling safe within their local boundaries and staying safely within them. I have started to feel comfortable within the world.
Not so long ago, human greed supported and promoted by self-appointed heads of “civilized” western countries caused so much grief in parts of this continent that would be impossible to describe in this blog. The results are clearly visible today. White descendants from those times are paying for the mistakes made by their predecessors and are becoming intruders in their own county. Racial integration is a long way off, or maybe never.
Life in the Zululand Yacht Club has a “MANANA” flavor and the Spaniards can no longer claim sole rights to it. Their friendly welcome to the international sailing community is beyond expectations and a benefit to both parties. Unfortunately you still see some of the African mentality and diehards that will never know when it’s time to quit.
A visit to the Midlands and Northern Game Parks has allowed me some experiences that will never forget.
I leave Richards Bay with some sadness and wish I could have stayed longer.
